Jennings County Parks and Recreation

OUR MISSION:

"Is to provide adequate and diversified recreational opportunities

to meet the needs of the citizens of the community."

In 1998 the Jennings County Parks and Recreation Department created their second consecutive Recreational Master Plan.  The Department feels that planning is the key to success and it is with their planning efforts that they step back  out of our daily routines, to get a better picture of where we are in terms of our recreational system. What amenities do we currently support? What are the immerging needs of our community? Is our community growing? Is our recreational system growing in relation to the public’s growth? How can we develop our recreational system to meet those needs? How do we compare to other counties and their recreational system? Are we following the guidelines presented to us by the State and their Division of Outdoor Recreation? What possibilities are we neglecting? What are the possibilities of outside funding? These and more questions were the driving impetus of 1998-2002 plan and the goal of creating the best possible recreational system relative to our limited funds.

The Jennings County Parks and Recreation Master Plan ”JCPRMP”is a theoretical as well as practical study and guide to recreation in our county. The plan looks at the entire county, accounting for all amenities of Federal, State, local, and private properties. These amenities are then studied along with local issues. We then formulate an action plan based on accepted recreational standards, professional advice, public opinion, our funding resources and possible limitations.

The mission of the Plan and the JCPRMP- Board is to study the planning area and create a specific map to lead our community into the next century. Specifically the mission of the Board, the Department, and the governing bodies is: To provide adequate and diversified recreational opportunities to meet the needs of the citizens of the community.

Recreation may be viewed as a common ground, as an arena were the public can and should come together and enjoy this life. Our current accelerating industrial lifestyles sometimes disconnect ourselves from our earth, our families, and often times, ourselves. Recreation is also one of the main components of our children's growth and development. Providing for our children and the child within us all is the goal and mission of recreation. Providing quality opportunities insures the citizens of Jennings County fertile ground to live and enjoy our beautiful common ground.

Planning is an on going process and this plan is intended to provide a stronger foundation for our future recreational plans. Whether or not specific issues are financed and brought into reality is beyond the scope of this plan to some extent. The plan will not only define our specific actions, but define our limitations also, in hope that they can be further studied and eventually overcome. As subsequent plans are written and our county’s legislators become more attuned to the full spectrum of our county's needs, we as a community will be increasingly more prepared to supply the recreational needs of the citizens. Thank you.
