History:

Climbing at the Muscatatuck Park first started in 1991. Greg Martin soon began working at the park after he graduated from Purdue in 1991. Greg soon met the young other Greg (Purnell) aka Joe Finney. A nearby local Mike Duncan completed the small circle which devoured many of the early moderates and low range test pieces. These three climbers were working through the grades and have all gone on to the 5.13 level and into route development. They all recognize the virgin stone at the Muscatatuck Park as the perfect training grounds for their subsequent achievements at Red River, Rifle, etc.

Traffic at the cliff stayed quite low for years. Beside Tim Powers and his crew of friends, hardly any visitors experienced this good, yet small gem. Tim repeated nearly all of the first phase problems.

In 1993 John Sherman made his visit while researching. He was not disappointed, yet in a later correspondence joked about "when was the green house effect going to kick in and dry out all this good stone in the east". Two good mid range problems and a V8 roof problem Hoosier Daddy (V8) are his contributions.

I met Tim Toula at Horsetooth, CO on Christmas day 1994 bouldering with Craig Luebeen. We were the only three individuals bouldering (without shirts). We started talking and I was trying to explain where I used to work in Indiana and that there were limestone problems, and then he named the crag before I could say Muscatatuck- freaked me out. He said he had just been there. He ended up putting a picture of the park on Indiana’s page on Rock n’ Road (remember that?). Appropriately so as it is the best place to climb in the state. Admittingly, Indiana does not have much to offer, yet the Muscatatuck Park is unique.

I moved back to the park in 1997 and development has been steady. Rich Purnell (colorado) comes back four or five times a year and puts up something really good. His Halloween (V8) comes in as the areas hardest problem. Anthony Saivola and some climbers from Indy and Bloomington have put up a few problems also. All in all about 300 problems have been done with many more to go. Other rock in the county has some potential, yet access is uncertain.
