The Muscatatuck Park is managed by the Jennings County Parks and Recreation Department. The Parks Department was created in 1967 in preparation of the state of Indiana handing back the Muscatatuck State Park to the residents of Jennings. The department is overseen by a five member Park Board. The Park Board is appointed for four year terms by the Circuit Court Judge (two park board members), the County Commissioners (two park board members), and the County Council (one park board member). Park board members are paid a nominal fee. The Jennings County Parks and Recreation Board meets every first Monday of the month, 5:30 at the William Read Home.

The department is small, yet has been petitioning the county leaders to grow and meet the demands of our changing and growing community. The Muscatatuck Park is the only property under the jurisdiction of the Parks Department. The department is helping the town of Vernon to manage the Vernon Commons, which is Indiana's oldest public park. The Vernon Commons was set aside in 1815 within the original town charter to be used forever as a place for public recreation. The department also helps maintains the street trees of Vernon and various plantings in and around our two twin towns

Volunteers are welcome at the Muscatatuck Park and the Jennings County Visitor Center. If you have the time and an area of interest; then we may be able to help you.
